Itamaraty defends Palestine and demands respect for human rights in the Gaza Strip
Brazilian government supports decision of International Court of Justice
247 - In an official statement released this week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Brazil's alignment with the recent advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which addresses Israel's responsibilities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
According to the statement, the Brazilian government "took note of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice" regarding Israel's obligations to the UN, other international organizations, and third-party states in relation to Palestine.
The ICJ concluded that Israel must "meet the basic needs of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip, respect and protect their human rights," and ensure the operation of humanitarian programs coordinated by the United Nations, including those of the Palestine Relief Agency (UNRWA).
The Court's decision reinforces principles already defended by Brazil in previous statements, both through written documents and oral arguments. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) emphasized that the Court's understanding is "in line with the considerations presented by Brazil" and reaffirmed the importance of ensuring "full, immediate, safe and unimpeded access" to humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population.
The text also condemns practices that violate international humanitarian law, such as forced displacement and the use of starvation as a method of warfare—conduct deemed unacceptable by the Court. For the Brazilian government, it is essential that Israel fully comply with the ICJ's rulings and other related decisions, in order to protect civilians and allow the safe operation of United Nations teams in the territory.
