ROME (Reuters) - Deaths from the Covid-19 epidemic in Italy increased by 610 on Thursday, compared to a rise of 542 the previous day, and the number of new cases also accelerated, with 4.204 new registrations, compared to 3.836 the day before.

Thursday's daily case count was the highest since April 5, a disappointment for a country that has been under quarantine since March 9 and is anxious for signs that the disease is receding.

The total number of deaths in Italy since the outbreak began on February 21 has reached 18.279, the Civil Protection Agency said, the highest number in the world.

The number of confirmed cases has risen to 143.626, the third highest global count, behind the United States and Spain.

There were 3.605 people in intensive care on Thursday, compared to 3.693 on Wednesday — a sixth consecutive daily decline that offers good news, despite the rise in new cases and deaths.

Of those originally infected, 28.470 have been declared recovered, compared to 26.491 the previous day.
