Reuters - Israelis celebrating Passover this week will have to hold the traditional "Seder," the meal that celebrates freedom after biblical slavery, confined to their homes under a national isolation policy to combat the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decree in a televised address, in which he also postponed an expected "exit strategy" that would gradually ease restrictions imposed to contain the spread of the virus.

Netanyahu said a ban on intercity travel will take effect Tuesday afternoon and end Friday morning.

On Wednesday night, when the roads would normally be crowded with families traveling to large festive Seder dinners, all Israelis, including the country's Arab minority, will be confined to their homes under the decree until the following morning.

"Each family will hold the Seder alone; you will celebrate only with the limited number of family members who are currently in your home," Netanyahu said.

Similar Seder practices were expected in other parts of the world where people are required to stay home because of the virus.

At the Seder, participants recount, through prayers, songs, and a festive meal, the exodus of the Israelites fleeing slavery in Egypt.
