"We have high-level coordination with the US, through the international coalition and the Joint Command of the Armed Forces [of Iraq], and in light of the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, we have taken preventive measures at the border," stated the spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, Tahsin Jafayi.
Jafayi also reported that Iraqi army forces and popular militias had been sent to the border with Syria, stressing that the measure was to guarantee the security of their borders. Furthermore, he assured that US troops had not entered Iraq.
It is worth noting that, in December, US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw troops from Syria, proclaiming victory over the terrorist group calling itself the Islamic State (Daesh, in its Arabic acronym).
At the time, Donald Trump emphasized that the fight against Daesh was the sole reason why American troops were in Syria.
