247 - The Iranian government announced the creation of the National Defense Council, a body whose main mission will be to coordinate strategies and expand the response capacity of the Armed Forces in the face of external threats. The information was released this Sunday (3) by the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council, the country's main security body.

The new council will be chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian and will include the heads of the three branches of government of the Islamic Republic, the main military commanders, and ministers linked to security and defense, reports Telesur. The Council will begin operating in the coming days, consolidating itself as a unique institution within the Iranian defense apparatus.

The announcement comes just over a month after the attacks against Israel, in a context of growing regional tension. The Council's central task will be "to study defense plans and improve the capabilities of the country's armed forces to respond to future threats," according to an official statement from the Secretariat.

On August 2nd, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, declared that Iran is implementing a comprehensive military readiness plan, with short, medium, and long-term actions. "This approach should also be applied to civilian sectors, with the aim of strengthening national infrastructure," he stated.

In a statement on Sunday, the army's commander-in-chief, General Amir Hatami, warned that Israel "should not be underestimated." Hatami stressed that the country remains on alert: "The threat from Israel is not over," he said, adding that Iran's missile and drone power "remains strong and ready for new operations."

The creation of the National Defense Council demonstrates Tehran's intention to increase the level of integration between different sectors of the state and to consolidate its strategic capacity in the face of instability in the Middle East.
