247 - Ten years ago, on April 8, 2013, neoliberals lost their greatest inspiration. On that Monday, Margaret Thatcher, the first and only woman to govern England, from 1979 to 1990, died. During that period, she privatized several companies, such as British Telecom, British Gas, and British Petroleum, which operated in sectors formerly monopolized by the State.
Former British Prime Minister Carol Thatcher died at age 87 after suffering a stroke, a family spokesperson said. "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother, Baroness Thatcher, died peacefully this morning following a stroke," said Lord Tim Bell.
She led the Conservatives to three election victories, governing for almost 12 years, the longest continuous period in government for a British prime minister since the beginning of the 19th century.
Her reforms shook England and, to this day, provoke heated debates. For liberals, she was the most important prime minister of the 20th century and restored the country's competitiveness. For Labour, she only deepened a situation of recession, high unemployment, and low growth.
