Moscow, the Russian capital, said on Tuesday that Ukrainian authorities had endorsed only one of the 10 proposed evacuation routes for civilians from fighting-affected areas, including five towards territory controlled by Kiev, the Interfax news agency reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that 723 people were evacuated via the Sumy-Poltava corridor, including 576 Indian citizens, in the first convoy.

Russia opposes Ukraine's entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), led by the United States, which is trying to expand its influence in some regions of Europe.

Ukraine said on Monday that a Russian proposal for humanitarian corridors was "completely immoral" after Moscow suggested it would allow people to flee Ukrainian cities only towards Belarus or Russia.

Civilians have been trapped in fighting since Russian troops occupied Ukraine on February 24, and officials say food, water, and other supplies are running out in some cities.

Ukrainian civilians began leaving the northeastern city of Sumy and the city of Irpin, near Kyiv, heading towards the Ukrainian city of Poltava, but Ukraine said Russian forces shelled another evacuation route – from the port city of Mariupol.
