Syrian government kills at least 25
Syrian boats strafed protesters opposed to President Bashar Assad in the poor regions of Latakia on Sunday.
Syrian boats strafed poor areas of Latakia on Sunday, killing at least 25 people, in a new attack on the Mediterranean coastal city, activists reported. As the armed ships attacked coastal areas of the city, troops advanced by land, protected by tanks, which moved through several neighborhoods.
Loud explosions could be heard throughout the city. "We are being attacked by land and sea," said a resident of the al-Ramel district, where a Palestinian refugee camp is located. According to witnesses, the artillery fire is intense, many houses have been destroyed, and thieves have broken into shops and offices.
At least three ships were reportedly involved in the attack, with Syrian soldiers raiding homes. More than one hundred people were reportedly arrested. The intense operation in Latakia, a port city once known as a summer tourist hotspot, is part of a government offensive in several Syrian cities aimed at eliminating protesters seeking the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad.
