The death toll in the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict has now reached more than 2 in the Gaza Strip, the Health Ministry said today (18), adding that more wounded in Israeli attacks have died.
According to the statement, a total of 2.016 people died and another 10.196 were injured during the Israeli offensive in Gaza more than a month ago. Among the dead are 541 children, 250 women, and 95 elderly men.
The death toll, which had been set at 1.980, rose after several people injured in the conflict died in hospitals in Gaza, Cairo, and Jerusalem, where they were taken for medical treatment.
Doctors also found a body in the rubble of the Shejaiya district, in eastern Gaza City, which had been there for more than three weeks, according to the statement.
Today, on the other side of the conflict, the Israeli army confirmed that five of the 64 soldiers killed in combat died as a result of "friendly fire."
Since hostilities began on July 8, the Israeli government has maintained that the army's objective is to destroy rocket launch sites and tunnels dug by Palestinian militias between Gaza and Israeli territory.
In recent weeks, the two sides have agreed to two 72-hour humanitarian truces, renewed on Thursday (15) for another five days, to continue negotiations on the terms of an agreement that will end the military offensive.
