Investigations into bribes paid by the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht have led to the Colombian president and 2016 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Juan Manuel Santos. The Colombian Congress now wants to know if the allegation that Santos received €1 million (approximately R$3,34 million) to finance his re-election in 2014 is true.

At the request of the opposition, the House of Representatives' impeachment committee, the only body with the power to try a president, formally opened an investigation.
If he manages to formalize an accusation and it is approved by Congress, Santos could face impeachment proceedings.

In early February, the Colombian National Electoral Council launched an investigation into Santos' 2014 campaign finances. The body announced that the money received by the president's team was part of the US$4,6 million that former Senator Otto Bula, who is currently imprisoned, had received from Odebrecht.

Santos received the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his contribution to the peace process between the Colombian government and the FARC, the country's largest and oldest guerrilla group.
