The newspaper tabulated the results obtained by a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan, Justin Wolfers, to find, in just 15 of the 50 US states, about 630 requests for registration of dismissals, compared to 281 the previous week, as shown in the week-by-week graph above.
The study draws attention to the behavior of Washington state, on the west coast, where restrictive measures had already begun to be implemented the previous week.
"There, unemployment notifications more than doubled last week and are now at levels recorded during the worst times of the Great Recession of 2008/2009."
