247, with Reuters - Dozens of far-right Polish activists gathered at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on Sunday (27) to protest at the same time as authorities and survivors celebrated the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp.
The two groups met in different parts of the camp, now an open-air museum, and did not actually meet. This is the first time the far-right has staged a protest at Auschwitz during the annual event, which also coincides with International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
At the official ceremony on Sunday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and other government officials joined in prayer alongside some of the last survivors of the concentration camp.
Elsewhere in the camp, far-right protesters wrapped in Polish flags, some emblazoned with the words "Polish Holocaust," laid flowers and sang the Polish national anthem.
The protest is taking place at a time of rising antisemitism fueled by far-right European groups.
