The US and China have agreed to cooperate with each other to "peacefully" "denuclearize" the Korean peninsula, according to diplomats from both countries. The decision was made after a visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry to China. On Saturday (April 13), he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.

Kerry is trying to convince China to put more pressure on North Korea, which has escalated its war threats in recent weeks after suffering a new round of sanctions from the UN Security Council in retaliation for its third nuclear test.

Upon being received by President Xi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the US Secretary of State stated that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is currently at "a critical moment."

"This is clearly a critical moment with some issues that pose major challenges," Kerry said upon being received by the head of state. "Issues relating to the Korean Peninsula, the challenge of Iran and nuclear weapons, Syria and the Middle East, and the world's economies that need to be revived," he added.

China is North Korea's only major ally and its key supplier of aid and trade. Chinese authorities are the only ones with influence over Kim Jong-un's government.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday in Seoul that the United States "will not accept" North Korea becoming a nuclear power and stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un needs to weigh the consequences of a conflict in the region.
