The US is considering 'reconsidering' sanctions against Venezuela under specific conditions.
This is the first rapprochement between Caracas and Washington since the breaking of diplomatic relations in January 2019.
Sputnik - The US would be willing to ease sanctions against Venezuela if progress is made in negotiations between the government and the country's opposition, said Ned Price, spokesman for the US State Department.
"We will reconsider some sanctions policies if, and only if, the parties make significant progress in the negotiations led by Venezuela in Mexico, to achieve the fulfillment of the Venezuelan people's aspirations for a true, authentic democracy," the spokesman said in his official report on Friday (11).
According to Price, a few days ago, a US delegation was in Caracas and held talks with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, although they did not address the issue of sanctions as such, which, according to the spokesperson, "remain fully in effect."
However, he said that Washington would "review" some sanctions policies.
According to several Biden administration officials, the main objective of the talks was to secure the release of American citizens imprisoned in Venezuela.
"The second priority [of the US delegation] was defending the democratic aspirations of the Venezuelan people, making it very clear, frankly and openly, to the Maduro regime that we continue to support the Venezuelan people and their aspirations to have a government that responds to their needs," Price emphasized.
On March 5, Maduro met with a US delegation at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas. After the meeting, the president said that the two countries agreed to work on an agenda of common interest.
