(Sputnik) - The Joe Biden administration is considering imposing sanctions on Russia's nuclear agency Rosatom, Bloomberg reported.

The article states that the US government has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukrainian territory, and the Russian Ministry of Defense assured that the attacks are not directed against Ukrainian cities or endanger the civilian population, but seek to disable military infrastructure.

Numerous countries have strongly condemned Russia's intervention in Ukraine and activated various sets of individual and sectoral sanctions, which, in an unprecedented case, extend to Russian President and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The sanctions include, among other things, the partial disconnection of Russia from the SWIFT system, the freezing of the international reserves of the Central Bank of Russia, and, in the case of countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, an embargo on the import of Russian oil.

SWIFT (Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a platform that connects approximately 11.000 financial institutions in over 200 countries and serves as the foundation of the international financial system.
