NEW YORK - The United States government filed criminal charges Wednesday accusing Sayfullo Saipov of the truck attack in New York that left eight dead.

Saipov was charged with two crimes, including providing material support to the Islamic State and causing the deaths of pedestrians with a pickup truck he had rented.

The complaint alleges that Saipov waived his right against self-incrimination while in custody.

According to the complaint, he admitted to being inspired by videos of the Islamic State, chose Halloween for the attack because he expected more people on the street, and planned to proceed to the Brooklyn Bridge to attack more pedestrians.
