Sputnik Brazil - Two analysts who spoke to Sputnik see the US as trying to use the power of other countries to provoke tensions in the region and contain China's growing power.

The US has urged other countries to join Washington in supporting the self-governed territory of Taiwan following the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

The China Military Power Report, published on Tuesday (29), spoke of different "options" for mainland China's military campaigns with Taiwan, from "an air and/or sea blockade to a large-scale amphibious invasion to seize and occupy some of its nearby islands or all of Taiwan's".

The document aims to formalize the US strategy following the visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, and that of Vice President Kamala Harris to the Philippines.

Even without practical value, experts see it as a tool to ensure that lawmakers vote for a greater US military presence in the Asia-Pacific region to continue pressuring China, including through the possible deployment of US military infrastructure and weapons, including medium-range missiles, in the southern Philippines, the closest point to Taiwan's territory.

According to Aleksandr Lomanov, deputy director of the EM Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the report is not aimed solely at American politicians.

"The American exaggeration of any threat to Taiwan from China aims to attract allies to a possible conflict, seeking to influence those who are undecided to switch to the American side as quickly as possible, simply to create nervousness and uncertainty in those who were not and will not switch to the US side," he told Sputnik. He highlighted members of the Quad and AUKUS groups as key allies in provoking new tensions with China.

"[...] After renewed hope that the United States would behave sensibly, not provoke China, not create points of tension, there was an incident with an American ship in the South China Sea. The Americans decided to use this platform [the G20] to remind China of its hegemony," he added.

The academic emphasized that there are no "significant consensuses" or agreements that can remedy a situation in which the US considers China a strategic adversary. Now, the only thing that can be attempted is to form a formula for interaction that prevents a direct conflict, he says.

Li Fei, director of the Center for the Pacific Development of Taiwan Strait Linkages at Xiamen University, China, believes that the US will not succeed with the Taiwan "letter," just as it failed with previous ones.

"The main objective of the US is to complicate the situation in the region," Li told Sputnik. He cited cases from the past four years such as the trade war, the unrest in Hong Kong, Beijing's "blaming" for the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Xinjiang autonomous province.

Currently, points out the member of Xiamen University, Washington is exploiting the disputes between China and neighboring countries, such as Japan and India, in the South China Sea, the dispute between the two Koreas, and also fueling the conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

The expert explains that China's growing industrial potential and influence are leading the US to "enlist" other countries in this fight, both in the West and even within the international community itself.

"However, if they abuse it, the Taiwan Charter will also become a puppet. The United States is cautious in this regard, but in any case, they will lose the pressure mechanism in Taiwan, just as their plans to destabilize Hong Kong failed," Li Fei concluded.
