247 - After two years of intense fighting, Israel and Hamas signed a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, representing a significant step towards peace in the region. The agreement, brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, was formalized this Thursday (9), after negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh.

What was agreed upon

1. Immediate ceasefire

Both sides agreed to cease all hostilities, establishing a pause in military actions. The agreement includes the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of prisoners from both sides.

2. Prisoner exchangeHamas has pledged to release all Israeli prisoners held since October 2023, while Israel has agreed to release approximately 2.000 Palestinian prisoners, including women, children, and long-term detainees.

3. Humanitarian AidThe agreement provides for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, including food, medicine and fuel, to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region.

4. International supervisionThe implementation of the agreement will be monitored by an international coalition composed of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, the United States, and the United Nations, ensuring compliance with the established conditions.

Points still pending

1. Disarmament of Hamas

The disarmament of Hamas is a central issue in the agreement. The effective implementation of this commitment remains undefined.

2. Governance of GazaThe political future of Gaza is another point of contention. Hamas has proposed the formation of a transitional government under international supervision, but Israel and other international actors have reservations about Hamas's participation in the post-conflict government.

3. Reconstruction and long-term stabilityRebuilding Gaza and ensuring lasting peace requires significant efforts. Beyond humanitarian aid, a comprehensive plan will be needed to rebuild infrastructure and promote political and social stability in the region.

Challenges for implementation

Despite the progress, the implementation of the agreement faces substantial challenges. Opposition from far-right elements within the Israeli government could hinder the fulfillment of the agreed-upon conditions. Furthermore, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, requiring swift and effective action to prevent a setback in the peace process.

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas represents a significant opportunity for peace in Gaza. However, the realization of this agreement will depend on the commitment of both parties and the international community to ensure the implementation of the established conditions, aiming for a lasting and sustainable peace in the region.
