In a new offensive against the Supreme Court, Eduardo Bolsonaro asks the US to completely freeze Moraes' accounts.

A congressman presented the Trump administration with translations of Brazilian news reports and was told that the financial blockade through the Magnitsky Act would apply to any currency.

247 - Brazilian Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), currently on leave from his position, met with representatives from the United States Department of State to discuss the application of the Magnitsky Act against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. This information comes according to columnist Bela Megale. The GlobeEduardo presented translations of articles from the Brazilian press that address the banks' interpretation of the sanction imposed on Moraes by President Donald Trump's administration. According to the reports shared by the congressman, the prevailing understanding among financial institutions in Brazil is that the restriction would be limited to transactions in dollars, leaving operations in the national currency free.

However, according to sources close to Eduardo, representatives of the US government contradicted this view. According to them, the sanction should imply a ban on bank transactions in any currency. In this scenario, Alexandre de Moraes would, in practice, be prevented from carrying out any financial operation in the banking system.

According to what Eduardo told allies, representatives of the Trump administration are considering issuing a direct statement to Brazilian banks to clarify the effects of the sanctions or, possibly, adopting punitive measures against institutions that fail to comply with the restrictions.

Eduardo Bolsonaro's actions in the United States were harshly criticized by Supreme Court ministers during the reopening of the Judiciary's work, this Friday (1). Without mentioning names, the senior member of the Court, Gilmar Mendes, stated that "it is no secret to anyone that attacks on our sovereignty were fomented by radicals", adding that "a congressman, at the forefront of the sell-out, cowardly fled" to the United States to foment attacks on the Supreme Court, which would characterize, according to him, "a true act of treason".

The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, also spoke emphatically in defense of Moraes. In his opening speech at the session, he stated that his colleague acted with "bravery" and paid "high personal costs" to contain the advance of authoritarianism and preserve democracy in the country.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes himself addressed the issue in his speech. Without directly mentioning Eduardo's name, the minister associated the current attacks against him with a known pattern. According to Moraes, the perpetrators of these actions "repeat the modus operandi of the attempted coup" recorded in the attacks of January 8, 2023.
