Mamdani's election is a 'strong message against Trump's extremism,' says Gleisi.

According to the minister, the socialist's victory in New York represents a rejection of the far right and a sign of hope for progressive forces.

247 - The Minister-Chief of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, assessed that the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York sends "a strong message of rejection of Donald Trump's far-right policies."

“The election of Zohran Mamdani puts a socialist, son of immigrants and defender of the Palestinian cause in the mayor's office of New York. It is a strong message of rejection of Donald Trump's far-right policies from voters in the largest city in the United States. It is also a sign of hope for forces that defend peace and democracy around the world,” said Gleisi.

Mamdani, 34, was projected to win the race and will become the first Muslim to govern New York. A three-term state representative, the politician, a member of the Democratic Party and linked to the "democratic socialist" wing, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primaries to Mamdani himself.

In his campaign, the new mayor promised to implement the city's first universal daycare program, make public transportation free, and freeze rent for about one million residents with stable contracts—central measures of a platform aimed at reducing inequalities and expanding access to public services.

Mamdani's candidacy sparked enthusiasm among young people and progressive sectors, consolidating a new dynamic within the Democratic Party. With a discourse focused on inclusion and social justice, the immigrant politician became a symbol of renewal in American politics.

With his victory confirmed, he will assume office on January 1, 2026, succeeding current mayor Eric Adams. His administration is expected to face complex challenges, particularly in the areas of housing, transportation, and restructuring municipal public services.

The result represents a symbolic turning point in New York politics and reinforces the rise of a new generation of progressive leaders in the United States. In other states, Democrats also achieved significant victories: Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey won their gubernatorial races by a wide margin.

Tuesday's elections served as a barometer of American political sentiment, indicating a rejection of extremism and strengthening the progressive camp on the eve of the 2026 legislative elections.

In California, Democrats further expanded their political power, winning the right to redraw electoral districts—a strategic move that should directly influence the balance of power in the House of Representatives.

According to analysts, the party's performance at the polls reinforces the interpretation expressed by Gleisi Hoffmann: the result in New York transcends borders and resonates as a sign of democratic resistance in the face of the advance of the far right.
