A terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Nice, France, on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, during the Bastille Day national holiday celebrations, the Arab news agency Al-Jazeera reported on Saturday, July 16; the truck attack left at least 84 dead; 18 people are in critical condition.

On the night of July 14-15, 2016, in the French city of Nice, a truck ran over a crowd of people who had come to the waterfront promenade to watch fireworks in honor of France's national holiday – Bastille Day.
The driver drove the vehicle in such a way as to run over as many people as possible. According to witnesses, the truck, without applying the brakes and swerving, ran over pedestrians for approximately two kilometers, killing more than 80 people.
The truck driver was Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian origin, Reuters reports, citing a source close to the investigation.
Later, French leader François Hollande declared an extension of the state of emergency in the country.
François Hollande later stated that the country will strengthen its presence in Syria and Iraq and will continue "fighting against those who attack us on our own land."
