Sputnik News - Russian economist Valentin Katasonov commented on the possibility of a further tightening of US monetary policy and its consequences for the global economy.

The chair of the Federal Reserve (Fed, the US central bank), Janet Yellen, has announced the possibility of tightening monetary policy.

Janet Yellen said that raising interest rates gradually is the most appropriate policy measure in the context of increased uncertainty about inflation, reinforcing the US central bank's forecast of another interest rate hike this year.

Economist and professor at the Moscow State University of International Relations (MGIMO), Valentin Katasonov, commented on this possible measure to the Russian television channel Tsargrad.

"The US reminds me of a plane that takes off and has a 500-meter acceleration path, but landing requires a kilometer, and there's no such path. I don't know how they're going to unload such a 'burden.' It's very difficult. If they do that to the American economy, then everything will explode," Katasonov explained.

He added that China is trying to rid itself of US influence, but is doing so very carefully. Katasonov also noted that the Asian giant has already begun operating in the oil futures markets using Chinese currency, which could be a real revolution.
