Denmark reacts to Trump's statement about buying Greenland: "It's not going to happen"
Danish Minister Troels Lund Poulsen reinforces Greenland's sovereignty and rules out the possibility of a sale to the US.
247 - Denmark responded on Wednesday (5) to statements by US President Donald Trump, who reaffirmed his interest in Greenland and suggested that the territory could become part of American soil "in one way or another," AFP highlights via UOLThe Danish Defense Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, categorically rejected the idea, stating that "this will not happen." He emphasized that any decision about the island's future rests exclusively with the Greenlandic people. "The direction Greenland wishes to take will be decided by the Greenlanders," declared Poulsen.
Greenland, the largest island in the Arctic, is a territory belonging to the Crown of Denmark, but it has an autonomous government with broad powers. The region has great strategic importance and, according to analysts, harbors vast unexplored reserves of minerals and oil, making it a focus of geopolitical interest.
In a speech to the US Congress on Tuesday (4), Trump reiterated his desire to make the island part of the United States. "We really need this for international world security (...) and I believe we will achieve it. One way or another, we will achieve it," he stated. The Republican also made grandiose promises about the region's future. "We will keep the safe, we will prepare the rich, and together we will take Greenland to levels we never imagined possible," he declared.
The statement comes at a sensitive time for the territory, which is preparing for legislative elections on March 11. Faced with concerns about potential external interference, the Greenlandic Parliament has passed legislation prohibiting political parties from receiving anonymous or foreign donations.
