Brasilia – President Dilma Rousseff said today (3) that the proposed resolution on privacy The resolution on the internet, presented to the United Nations (UN) by Brazil and Germany on Friday (1st), should receive "priority treatment". Dilma wrote about the subject in posts on her Twitter account. "Brazil and Germany presented a joint draft resolution to the UN General Assembly (...) We consider that privacy on the internet is part of the human rights "And their defense should be given priority treatment," the president wrote.
In the document submitted to the UN, the two countries observe that, despite the need for measures to combat terrorism, these practices must be carried out in accordance with international law, human rights, refugee law, and humanitarian law. Brazil and Germany request, in the document, guarantees for the protection of data in digital communications; measures to cease violations of the right to privacy (including through the adaptation of national legislation); a review of current procedures; the establishment of national mechanisms for monitoring espionage activities; and greater transparency in the area of communications.
The proposed resolution, which will be reviewed by delegations from the 193 UN member states, calls on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, to submit a preliminary report on the protection of the right to privacy to the UN General Assembly as a matter of priority, along with recommendations to be considered by countries at upcoming sessions in October 2014 and 2015.
