Democrats are urging the US government to investigate Musk's acquisition of Twitter.
The senators pointed out that the significant changes to Musk's policy could make the platform vulnerable to abuse through fraud, scams, and misinformation.
Sputnik Brazil - Senators highlight concerns about the integrity and security of the platform following the changes implemented by the businessman.
Seven Democratic senators sent a letter to the US Federal Trade Commission on Thursday (17), requesting an investigation into Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter and whether he is undermining the integrity and security of the social media platform.
"We wrote about Twitter's serious and intentional disregard for the safety of its users and urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate any violations of Twitter's consent decree or other violations of our consumer protection laws," the senators said.
Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal, along with five other senators, also highlighted concerns that Musk's drastic change in company policy could potentially violate the committee's consent decree, which prohibits false statements and requires Twitter to maintain a comprehensive information security program.
The senators pointed out that the significant changes to Musk's policy could make the platform vulnerable to abuse through fraud, scams, and misinformation.
Senators are concerned that this abuse became evident when Musk introduced a new verification system, under which users can now receive a verification badge for $7,99 (about R$40) per month. The sale of the verification badge was suspended after users began impersonating politicians and other personalities, which confused much of the public. However, a new system will be reintroduced on November 29th.
Musk's acquisition also led to the resignation of Twitter executives responsible for the platform's privacy and cybersecurity, the senators' letter said.
Musk changed the company's day-to-day operations, fired former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, and thousands of employees from the social network. Musk finalized the acquisition of Twitter on October 28, which cost him $44 billion.
