Also participating in the meeting were President Michel Temer; Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela; and Argentine Vice President Gabriela Michetti.
Before the meeting, Trump called for the "complete" restoration of democracy and political freedoms in Venezuela and asserted that the situation was unsustainable and "completely unacceptable." He recalled the US sanctions imposed during his presidency on the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
The Colombian president said he is deeply concerned about what is happening in Venezuela. "Our greatest interest is defending the Venezuelan people, ensuring their rights are respected, and that democracy is restored. We discussed the form and necessity of coordinating efforts to try to produce a peaceful transition that maintains stability and democracy." The president insisted that it is necessary to work to recover democracy in Venezuela.
The president reported that no specific measures were adopted at the meeting, but that they agreed to "work as a team." He reiterated the need for Venezuela to release political prisoners and hold clean elections, free from fraud.
