Sputnik - More than 760 people have died in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi due to Tropical Cyclone Idai, according to the latest data.

Mozambique's Minister of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Celso Correia, quoted on Sunday (24) by Reuters, raised the number of fatalities from Cyclone Idai's passage through his country from 414 to 446.

According to the newspaper Verdade, the deaths recorded in the last 24 hours correspond to the district of Nhamatanda, Sofala province, where a wave of water surprised thousands of local residents, ripped up several sections of a road and left the provincial capital, Beira, isolated from the rest of Mozambique.

If we add the deceased in Zimbabwe (at least 259) and Malawi (56), the total number is already at 761.

Vast areas are still isolated by the floods and there are hundreds missing, so in all likelihood the death toll will be revised upwards in the coming days.

Mozambique's National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) estimated that more than 518.000 people were affected, of whom 109.733 were rescued by emergency responders.
