247 - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday (29) that China will restrict the granting of visas to US citizens who interfere in Hong Kong's internal affairs.
Zhao Lijian noted that China is urging the US to stop interfering in its affairs and warned that Beijing will respond with vigorous countermeasures if Washington continues this practice.
On Friday (27), US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the introduction of visa restrictions for members of the Chinese Communist Party "believed to be responsible for or complicit in undermining the high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong or violating human rights and fundamental freedoms" in the Region, which has special autonomous status but belongs to China, reports Russia Today.
On the same day, the Wall Street Journal reported that, according to Beijing, the US is "meddling" in the affairs of Hong Kong and Taiwan, which could jeopardize the purchase of American products in Phase One of the trade agreement between the two countries.
