Leonardo Sobreira, from Beijing (247) - China will focus in the coming years on developing the weakest areas of its economy, said Zhao Chenxin, deputy director of the Leading Group of the Development and Reform Commission of the Communist Party of China, highlighting "core technologies."

Speaking to reporters at the press center of the 20th National Congress of the CPC on Monday, the 17th, the official reiterated a promise made by the party's general secretary, Xi Jinping, at the opening of the meeting. Zhao alluded to the need for China to "win a critical battle in core technologies."

The statement comes amid a US-led offensive targeting advanced Chinese technology. In late August of this year, the U.S. Department of Commerce blocked the sale of advanced chips to China, temporarily striking the Asian country's artificial intelligence sector. New restrictions were applied earlier this month against China's supercomputing sector.

Zhao also noted the need to improve food, energy, and resource security, as well as supply chains. This does not mean, the official later observed, a further closure of the Chinese economy.

Focusing on the domestic market doesn't mean reducing openness, Zhao stressed. The new development model is precisely about the interaction between domestic and international economies, he said.

Emphasizing that economic globalization is an "irreversible" process, he stated: Some countries want to decouple, but the world will never return to isolation and division.

We believe that openness and cooperation continue to be the historical trend, the official said. We will always be on the right side of history, without being intimidated by headwinds and currents, he added.

Faced with a “complex international context,” Zhao said, several economic achievements These were hard-won gains achieved by China, gains that would not have been possible without Xi Jinping's leadership and his Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, he emphasized.
