People's Daily Online - China has called on Asian economies to strengthen economic integration in order to boost regional competitiveness and respond more effectively to the challenges arising from the recent wave of protectionism and unilateralism.

"In the face of a cloud of economic uncertainty, Asian economies have managed to maintain a solid growth path, contributing around 60% to global GDP growth over the past decade," said Li Baodong, Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia, during a press conference on Tuesday (26), in Boao, in the Chinese province of Hainan.

The uncertainties arise essentially from protectionism and the potential financial squeeze, according to statements by economists and experts prior to the forum, which begins this Thursday (28).

"In order to make the regional economy more balanced and healthy, Asian economies must unite to promote multilateralism and globalization," Li said.
