China says it does not rule out the possibility of using force against 'interference by external forces' in Taiwan.
A spokesperson for the Communist Party of China indicated that a military solution to the issue would be a measure of "last resort."
Sputnik - According to the Chinese Communist Party, Beijing is prepared to resolve the Taiwan issue by military means if necessary. Beijing has never relinquished its self-governing territory.
The "peaceful reunification" of Taipei with Beijing "is in China's interests [and] the number one choice for the Taiwan issue," a spokesman for the Chinese Communist Party said on Saturday (15).
"We do not promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the right to take all necessary measures against the interference of external forces and the extremely small number of pro-independence separatist forces in Taiwan and their separatist activities," Sun Yeli assured at a press conference on the eve of the opening of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China.
China's actions will not be directed against the people of Taiwan, as Beijing's goal is to promote a peaceful reunification of the island with mainland China, he stressed.
"We will do our best to achieve peaceful reunification. Even if there is the slightest possibility of such reunification, we will implement it to the end," he assured.
The representative indicated that a military solution to the issue would be a measure of "last resort," accusing "Taiwanese separatists" of conducting provocations and "external forces" of using Taiwan to contain China.
"This is contrary to the interests of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and leads to instability in the region. We hope our compatriots understand that reunification is a good thing and that separatism is a path to nowhere. We also hope they understand that they should not trust strangers," according to the spokesperson.
