Called a fraud, Trump calls for the resignation of a Supreme Court justice.
Likely Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has called for the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, describing her as mentally incompetent for harshly criticizing him in a series of press interviews. Ginsburg called the Republican a "fraud" and stated that "he has no consistency about himself." "Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg embarrassed everyone by making very stupid political statements about me," Trump said on his Twitter account. "Her mind is gone -- resign!" he added.
Reuters - Probable Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, describing her as mentally unfit for harshly criticizing him in a series of press interviews.
"US Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg embarrassed everyone by making very stupid political statements about me," Trump said in a Twitter post. "Her mind is broken -- resign!" he wrote.
The New York businessman reprimanded Ruth, 83, for criticizing him this week and for expressing concern about the country's future if he is elected in November.
Trump stated that it is inappropriate for Supreme Court justices to comment on political campaigns. On Tuesday, he told the New York Times that he considers the episode a disgrace to the court and that the judge should apologize to her colleagues.
Trump is not alone in his censure. In an editorial published this Wednesday, the New York Times urged the judge to maintain the Supreme Court's tradition of silence on political campaigns.
"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg needs to stop making political assessments and naming names," the newspaper opinion piece said.
The judge was not immediately available for comment on Trump's remarks and the New York Times editorial. She is one of the liberal members of the Supreme Court, which has been ideologically divided between four liberals and four conservatives since the sudden death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia in February.
In an interview with CNN, the judge said that Trump is "a fraud".
"He lacks consistency regarding himself," she said. "He says whatever comes to his mind at the moment," she stated.
