Celso Amorim says sanctions against Russia are 'ideological fanaticism' and only bring the country closer to China.

The former foreign minister stressed that closer ties between Russia and China will deepen tensions with the US.

247 - Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim stated that imposing sanctions on Russia is a "mistake" and a "political fanaticism" that harms Europe by accelerating the rapprochement between Moscow and China. According to the former minister, if Putin seeks more support from China, it will increase the possibility of creating a "Eurasian bloc," which will deepen tensions with the US. "These sanctions against Russia only lead Russia to get closer to China. So, instead of having a bipolarity that is already not good between the US and China, you end up having a bipolarity between the US and a Eurasian bloc that brings together the most populous country in the world, which will be the largest economy in the world this decade, with the largest country in the world. So what is the gain from doing this?", declared Celso Amorim.

According to the former foreign minister, an armed conflict already exists between the two countries, but he argued that Putin's strategy in recognizing the Donetsk and Luhansk republics is aimed at blocking Ukraine's entry into NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). 

Amorim said that the Russian president's measure will not result in a Third World War. "A Third World War is a fantasy in this context. There will be no Third World War under any circumstances; nobody will risk total destruction. Now, there is a risk of local escalation, there always is," he stated.

The former minister criticized NATO's "obsession" with getting ever closer to Russia, through Ukraine, and stated that this NATO push to "push itself further and further east is not a good thing."
