247 - The White House announced that if Russia does not accept a ceasefire or a peace agreement in the war in Ukraine within the next 50 days, the United States will impose high trade tariffs and secondary sanctions on Moscow. The measure could also affect countries that continue to buy Russian oil, reports the TASS news agency.

"If Russia refuses to legitimately accept a ceasefire, then it will face very high tariffs and also secondary sanctions," said White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt on Thursday (17). According to her, the penalties would also affect "countries that are buying oil from Russia," which would cause "deep damage to the Russian economy."

According to Leavitt, US President Donald Trump wants to end the war through a "diplomatic solution".

By signaling possible punishments for nations that maintain trade relations with Moscow, Washington is putting pressure on countries that have sought a stance of neutrality or balance, such as Brazil, India, and China.
