Brazil Current Network - In parallel with the demonstrations in defense of democracy and popular vote, which are taking place in dozens of cities in Brazil, this Monday (9), Brazilians living abroad also called for acts today. Against the attempted coup d'état carried out by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro, the demonstrators shout “no amnesty for the coup plotters”.

The protests were called by groups and collectives fighting for Brazilian democracy. Like the national demonstrations planned for today, they demand that all those responsible for the invasion of the Three Powers headquarters be punished. The demand "no amnesty" applies to those who participated in the criminal act, and also to those who encouraged the attacks on the democratic rule of law, such as Bolsonaro himself.

The international vigil for democracy in Brazil, as the movement has been called, will be concentrated mainly in front of consulates in Germany, Argentina, Canada, Spain, the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. (See locations and times below)

The world condemns terrorism.

“We are deeply outraged by the attack on democracy perpetrated by Bolsonaro supporters, who invaded and vandalized the three houses of the central government: the Presidential Palace, Congress, and the Supreme Federal Court. We vehemently condemn this terrorist attack. And we demand that they be punished exemplarily in honor and defense of Brazilian Democracy,” highlighted the Black Front of the United Kingdom on its social media, while calling for a vigil this Monday at 18 pm at the Embassy in London.

The condemnation of Bolsonaro's terrorism has also united different world leaders from East to West. Since Sunday, dozens of heads of state and government have condemned the attack on democracy and supported decisions announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Pope Francis specifically mentioned Brazil in a speech to the Vatican's diplomatic corps today, lamenting the violence in the country.

Response to Bolsonaro's supporters

United States congressmen are also demanding Bolsonaro's extradition so that the former president can answer to Brazilian justice regarding his involvement in the attempted coup. By the end of Sunday, approximately 300 Bolsonaro supporters had been arrested in the act of attempting to "overthrow, through acts of violence or serious threats, the legitimately constituted government." In this case, the penalties can range from 4 to 12 years in prison.

The Civil Police of the Federal District will hear the detainees in the investigation into all the criminal acts that occurred on the Esplanade of Ministries yesterday afternoon. Also today, approximately another 1.200 Bolsonaro supporters went to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília, after the Military Police and the Army carried out an order to dismantle the Bolsonaro supporters' encampment in the federal capital.
