Brazil was elected this Wednesday (29) to chair the United Nations (UN) Peacebuilding Commission in 2014. The mission is to help countries that have recently emerged from armed conflicts to build a scenario of political stability and security.
On Brazil's agenda are projects for countries such as Guinea-Bissau, Burundi, the Republic of Guinea, Liberia, the Central African Republic, and Sierra Leone.
Created in 2005, the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission aims to assist nations with still fragile scenarios in consolidating their capacity to guarantee their own national security, as well as sustainable development with social inclusion.
In a statement, the Brazilian government indicated that it intends to promote, during its term, greater participation of developing countries and regional and sub-regional organizations in the activities of the commission, as well as maintain a "productive engagement" in the UN Security Council.
According to the statement, the activities led by Brazil will take into account the "interdependence" between security and development.
