247 - In a forceful statement during a United Nations conference held this Tuesday (29), the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, announced that the Brazilian government will apply sanctions against Israel, holding the country responsible for the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, highlights a report by Telesur.

The measures include the immediate suspension of Brazilian exports of military equipment to Israel, stricter controls on imports from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, and Brazil's formal support for the genocide complaint filed by South Africa with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

“Brazil’s intervention in the case brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice under the Genocide Convention, the investigation and stricter control of imports from illegal settlements and other illegally occupied lands, the continued denial of defense exports to Israel under the Arms Trade Treaty, support for a UN-led international verification mission to monitor compliance with international law and a mechanism modeled on the Special Committee against Apartheid, and technical support to the Palestinian Authority in key areas of state-building as needed,” Mauro Vieira stated in his official speech.

Brazil's position comes amid the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where more than 60 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israeli military offensive in October 2023. The Brazilian government reinforced its commitment to international law, human rights, and the self-determination of the Palestinian people, in accordance with resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.

Mauro Vieira also highlighted Brazil's commitment to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), whose work has been the target of political pressure and funding cuts. According to him, "continued support for UNRWA's activities, including the chairmanship of its Advisory Committee, ensuring a fundamental distinction between legitimate criticism of state policies and practices affecting Palestinians and antisemitism, following the recommendations of the UN Special Rapporteurs," is an essential part of Brazilian policy for the region.

The announcement of the sanctions marks a hardening of Brazilian diplomacy towards Israel, especially in the face of growing international mobilization against the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Brazil's decision aligns with the growing global chorus demanding accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the military offensive in Gaza.

This measure also reinforces Brazil's role as a relevant actor in the multilateral system and a legitimate interlocutor in the debate about the future of the Middle East. Since the beginning of the genocide, the country has advocated for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of the civilian population, and the resumption of negotiations based on a two-state solution.

In his speech, Mauro Vieira emphasized that Brazil will continue to act actively to ensure that international law prevails: “There is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without accountability. The suffering of the Palestinian people can no longer be ignored.”

Brazil's stance resonates at a time of growing global diplomatic tensions, in which several countries have reviewed their relations with Israel in light of allegations of serious crimes in Gaza. Mauro Vieira's speech at the UN places Brazil at the center of international pressure for justice and accountability in the face of one of the most serious humanitarian tragedies of the 21st century.
