Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Lyon after 22 PM.

Between July 18 and September 10, supermarkets and grocery stores in the French city can no longer sell alcohol until 6 a.m., as part of a campaign against alcoholism in the summer.

Roberta Namour – 247 correspondent in Paris – The city of Lyon, the second largest in France, has imposed a measure that promises to cause controversy among French tourists and nightlife enthusiasts. The sale of alcohol for takeaway is prohibited between 10 pm and 6 am. The aim of the action is to combat "mass and brutal" alcoholism during the summer, as stated by the city hall in a press release. The measure begins today and will last until September 22th.

With this ban, the city also aims to control nighttime noise in public places, reduce the number of street fights, and decrease broken glass on the ground. Businesses that violate the measure could face a fine of up to 750 euros, the mayor said. The order is due for renewal next year.

The city of Lille, in northern France, already enforces this law year-round in the city center. In Paris, the sale of alcoholic beverages for takeaway and consumption in public places has been prohibited after 21 pm during the summer in the Bassin de la Villette district.
