Brazil Agency - The death toll from avalanches in northern Afghanistan has surpassed 200, Afghan authorities reported today (26), adding that most of the deaths occurred in Panjshir province, north of Kabul.

At least 168 people have died in Panjshir province, according to Governor Abdul Rahman Kabiri, quoted by Agence France-Presse. The head of the Disaster Management Office in the Afghan Red Crescent, Abdul Rahman Kalantari, admitted the possibility of an increase in the number of victims in Panjshir. The previous count from authorities indicated around 100 dead.

The other deaths occurred in Nuristan and Badakhshan provinces in the Northeast, Nangarhar and Laghman in the East, and the central province of Bamiyan, which were heavily affected by adverse weather conditions that have plagued northern Afghanistan in recent days.

On Sunday (22), a snow avalanche that destroyed several houses in Badajshan province killed 12 people who were sleeping.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by natural disasters that cause a large number of deaths, as was the case with the landslides that killed 2 people in May 2014 in the Northeast region of the country.
