Texas gunman killed himself after chase, police say.

A man who killed at least 26 people in a Baptist church in a small Texas town on Sunday died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt; Tackitt said shots were exchanged between the assailant and two armed residents during a car chase after the shooting.

Reuters The man who killed at least 26 people in a Baptist church in a small Texas town on Sunday died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CBS News in an interview Monday morning.

Tackitt said shots were exchanged between the assailant and two armed residents during a car chase following the shooting.

"There was some exchange of gunfire, I believe, also on the road, and then (the assailant's vehicle) crashed," Tackitt said. "At that point we believe he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he crashed."
