EFE News Agency - At least six people died today (23) and another 40 were injured, mostly civilians, in a Taliban suicide attack in which an insurgent detonated a vehicle packed with explosives near a police barracks in southern Afghanistan.
An explosion near the entrance to the police headquarters in Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand province, caused "many casualties," police spokesman Salam Afghan told the EFE news agency.
"The terrorist detonated his vehicle (with explosives) near the main entrance of the police station, a space that is also used as a parking lot by many civilians," Afghan said. He added that among the dead are three women and two soldiers.
The spokesperson also said that, among the 40 injured, more than half are students from a Muslim religious school located a few meters from the site of the explosion, in addition to three soldiers. "Some of the injured are in serious condition," he said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a message on social media from their spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
"An attack against enemy puppets was carried out near the Helmand police headquarters, in which three armored vehicles (...) were destroyed, and several soldiers died," announced the Taliban spokesman.
The attack comes a day after US President Donald Trump announced that his country will remain involved in the 16-year war in Afghanistan, sending more troops.
