Current Brazil Network - A car bomb explosion in a building housing popular organizations in the city of Saravena, Arauca, Colombia, left at least one person dead and nine others injured. The attack took place on Wednesday (19). A Human Rights school, heavily criticized by the government of President Iván Duque, operated at the site. The terrorists fled after being caught firing at those present, according to a report by Leonardo Wexell Severo, from Dialogues from the South.

Colombia is preparing for a tense election year for South America. In addition to the inauguration of the leftist government in Chile on March 11th, the world is closely watching the prospects for a progressive resurgence in important nations of the continent. Also in March, on the 13th, legislative elections will take place in Colombia. Then, on May 29th, Colombians will choose the new president of the country traditionally allied with the United States.

But, for the first time in decades, the favorites are candidates from center-left parties and coalitions. Senator Gustavo Petro, from Colombia Humana, leads in the polls. And he has already received support from former Brazilian presidents Dilma Rousseff and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Lula himself leads the presidential race in another crucial election for the renewal of Latin America in global geopolitics. The former president is emerging as the favorite so far – even with a chance of winning in the first round, scheduled for October 2nd. Furthermore, his party, the PT, is regaining momentum and leading in the polls after almost a decade of intense media and judicial bombardment.

Persecution of popular leaders

“It is important to emphasize that this terrorist attack against the headquarters of the Central Unitary of Workers (CUT) and social movements occurred just one day after the ruling party requested the annulment of the legal status of the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (Fecode),” denounced the president of the union, Francisco Maltés. “And amidst a violent campaign of threats and persecution against popular leaders.”

Also coordinator of the National Strike Committee (CNP), Maltés pointed out that such bloody abuses are unacceptable. According to him, the only objective is to stifle the democratic process and impose a dictatorial regime. Thus, the leader recalled having recently achieved several victories. Among them, a policy of real gains for the minimum wage, using pressure and negotiation as two sides of the same coin.
