Russia has been conducting a special military operation in Ukraine since February 24th. The military action followed a request for assistance from the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) due to increased ceasefire violations in the region.
Both republics in the Donbass region were recognized by Russia on February 21 of this year, after eight years of fighting in the region against Ukrainian forces, including far-right neo-Nazi armed groups – such as the Azov Battalion.
According to the Russian government, the objective of the operation is to guarantee the security of the population of the PLR and DPR through the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.
