Brasilia - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated that Israel is attempting to destabilize his country. Assad's comments were a reference to Israeli airstrikes carried out last Wednesday against a military research center in the Syrian city of Jamraya.

According to Assad, the attacks exposed "the role that Israel is playing, in collaboration with enemy foreign forces and their agents on Syrian territory, to destabilize and weaken Syria."

According to US authorities, the attacks targeted a convoy carrying weapons to Lebanon.

"When we say something, we mean it," said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak. "We don't think Syria should be allowed to bring advanced weaponry into Lebanon," Barak added.
