Algeria justifies receiving Gaddafi's family.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the country authorized the entry of the Libyan leader's wife and three children for "strictly humanitarian reasons."

Algeria has authorized the entry of the wife and three children of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for "strictly humanitarian reasons," a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amar Belani, said on Tuesday.

When questioned by Agence France-Presse about a request issued by the National Transitional Council (NTC) for the return of Gaddafi's children - Aisha, Mohammed, and Hannibal - and his second wife, Safiya, as well as details of their whereabouts, Belani stated: "These people were accepted from Libya for strictly humanitarian reasons."

In an email, the spokesperson said that the country had informed the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN Security Council, and the President of the Executive Board of the National Transitional Council (NTC) of the fact.

On Monday, the Libyan Foreign Ministry announced the arrival of the family in Algeria. The rebels' Justice Minister, Mohammed al-Allagya, told Agence France-Presse that he would send a request to Algerian authorities to have Gaddafi's family sent back to Libya.

The whereabouts of Gaddafi himself are unknown. According to Sky News, the bodyguard of one of his sons said that the last time the leader was seen he was heading to southern Libya after holding meetings in Tripoli. This information comes from Dow Jones.
