Sputnik - Germany and other European Union (EU) member states continue to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, reports the German TV channel ZDF, citing data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

According to media reports, gas from Russia arrives in Belgium and is then transported to Germany. The supply volume is approximately five billion cubic meters per year, representing 5-6% of Germany's total gas demand.

In total, according to data from the energy company ICIS, currently 13% of European LNG imports come from Russia. The main buyers are France, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Previously, it was reported that a group of 12 countries, including Belgium, Greece, Italy, and Poland, demanded a significant reduction in the price ceiling for gas purchased from Russia to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis on consumers and businesses in Europe. The price ceiling is an unprecedented measure because the buyer, not the seller, sets the price.

The West intensified sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special military operation. This led to an increase in electricity, fuel, and food prices in Europe and the US.

Commenting on this initiative, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia will not supply anything abroad if it goes against its interests. In turn, the head of the Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom, Aleksei Miller, said that the European Union's unilateral price restrictions violate the main terms of the contract and that this implies the suspension of exports.
