Latin America approaches 2,5 million Covid-19 cases.

Coronavirus infection cases in Latin America have increased by 1 million in the last 18 days, due to a surge in cases in Brazil, which accounts for more than half of the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Latin America.

247 - To date, Latin America has recorded 2.480.821 infections and 112.104 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Cases in Latin America have increased by 1 million in the last 18 days, due to the general spread of infections, mainly in Brazil, which is the hardest-hit country with more than half of the infections and deaths in Latin America.

Brazil set a record for cases in the last 24 hours this Sunday, registering 30.476 new infections, bringing the total to 1.345.254 since the virus arrived in the country.

Regarding the death toll, the Ministry of Health recorded 552 new deaths from coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in the South American country to 57.658.

Despite the alarming numbers, several Brazilian states have begun reopening economic activities due to pressure from far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

Peru is the second country in the region in terms of number of infections, with 279.419 cases since the start of the pandemic. 

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) indicated that 3.430 new cases and 182 new deaths were registered in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll to 9.419 two days after the end of the general quarantine.

The new coronavirus figures in Peru coincided with the release of a survey reflecting that 58% of Peruvians believe the general quarantine should continue.

Mexico is the third most affected Latin American country by the pandemic, registering 216.852 accumulated cases of the new coronavirus. To date, the country has recorded 26.648 deaths from Covid-19, 267 of them registered in the last day.

Health authorities also warn that the actual number of infected people may be considerably higher than what they have been able to confirm through testing.

In Chile, the Ministry of Health reported on Sunday that 8.935 people have died from Covid-19 and the number of infections has reached 271.982 cases.

The Department of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS) of the Health entity specified that 6.089 patients died from the coronavirus with laboratory confirmation and 2.846 lost their lives without diagnostic confirmation, that is, as suspected and probable cases of the pandemic.

After 110 days since the first cases of Covid-19 were registered in Bolivia, infections and deaths are increasing, totaling 31.524 confirmed cases and 1.014 deaths, the Ministry of Health reported.
