Germany is pressuring China to isolate Russia.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized China's "special responsibility" towards Ukraine.
BERLIN/BEIJING (Reuters) - German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stressed China's "special responsibility" towards Ukraine in a phone call with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, the ministry said on Twitter on Saturday.
China on Friday abstained from vetoing a draft UN Security Council resolution that would have deplored Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a move Western countries saw as a victory demonstrating Russia's international isolation. See more information.
Wang said that China supported NATO, the European Union, and Russia in resuming dialogue on building a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security mechanism, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
"China does not support the use of sanctions to resolve problems and opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law," Wang said in the call, according to a statement released on Sunday.
"We believe the Council should contribute to a political solution to the current crisis, rather than instigating new confrontations," Wang said in the teleconference.
China has been preventing the use of expressions that authorize the use of force and sanctions, he added.
