Colonel José Luís Silva Silva, who was the military attaché at the Venezuelan embassy in the United States, broke with Nicolás Maduro and declared his support for the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Deputy Juan Guaidó; according to the Ministry of Defense, the colonel subordinated himself to international interests and committed "an act of treason and cowardice against the homeland."

The statement from the Ministry of Defense and the colonel's video were released on social media. In the video posted on Guaidó's Twitter account, addressing Venezuelans and members of the armed forces, Silva recognizes the congressman "as the sole and legitimate" president of Venezuela. He also states that no citizen and no institution in Venezuela is above the Constitution.
Deputy Juan Guaidó illegally proclaimed himself "interim president" and promised to call general elections.
