Forum Magazine, with information from World Economic Forum One of the most viral videos of 2016, with over two million views in Brazil alone, shows the indiscriminate use of women in advertising. The film is part of the #WomenNotObjects campaign and was created by Madonna Badger, an advertising executive.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Badger recounts working for questionable companies that exploit women's bodies, such as Calvin Klein. After losing her three daughters in a house fire, she began to demonstrate the harmful impact these advertisements can have on girls and women.
There is extensive research to support their crusade. In 2007, the American Psychological Association concluded that the sexual exploitation of women in magazines, films, TV programs, and websites is linked to mental health problems, eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression in girls and women. "The consequences of the indiscriminate use of girls' sexuality in the media today are very real and will likely be a negative influence on the healthy development of girls," said the head of the APA task force at the time.
